Workshop

Numerical Solution of MHD-Problems in Industrial Applications with liquid Metals

December 11th - 12th 2008 Linz, Austria

Location: Conference Centre at SIEMENS VAI, Turmstraße 44, Voest-Building BG47, Linz
Fee: 170 Euro per participant

Aim and Scope

In various industrial applications, like liquid metal processing, the need for flow simulations under the influence of electromagnetic fields has strongly increased during the last years. The available commercial codes are specialised either on fluid flow or electromagnetic simulations, and thus usually two different programs have to be coupled for the simulation of MHD problems. Basically, the coupling has to be considered in both directions, but it is often argued that the impact of the flow on the magnetic field can be neglected. In some cases, the magnetic field equations are solved in a fluid dynamic solver (like e.g. the FLUENT MHD module) or vice versa.

The aim of this workshop is to exchange experiences about the numerical solution of MHD problems in industrial applications. The used equations, assumptions, simplifications, codes, coupling and discretisation algorithms shall be discussed and critically analysed. Therefore, the participants are invited to present their work with special focus on their methods.

An opening lecture of Prof. Oszkar Biro from the Institute for Fundamentals and Theory in Electrical Engineering of the Technical University Graz (Austria) will give an overview of the state-of-the-art in numerical modelling of electromagnetical problems especially for experts in fluid dynamics.

The communication language will be English. The workshop fees include the meals during the workshop. Participants will get an invoice via mail.
